Assistance required for a child with cleft lip and palate deformity
Palakkad,
India
Lijo, the only son of Mr. Simon Paul, was born with the deformity of cleft lip and cleft palate. He underwent four corrective surgical operations, at 8 months, 18 months, 10 years and 13 years of age. Even after these operations the nasal twang in his speech persisted. He had to put up with a lot of derisive comments from his class-mates and others for this defect. Now he has completed his Higher Secondary education and has grown into a healthy young man. His ambition is to do a course in animation and work in that field.
His present condition is fairly summed up in the certificate issued by Dr. Shaji Mathew of Elite Mission Hospital, Thrissur, an expert in General and Plastic surgeries:

Mr. Lijo Simon, Chembakassery House, Anchery P.O., Thrissur, Kerala, India. This is a case of complete cleft lip and palate left side which were repaired in early childhood. He had revision lip repair and secondary correction of nasal deformity in 2001. In 2006 he had further correction of nose by bone grafting along with alveolar bone grafting.
He attended Plastic Surgery outpatient clinic today with complaint of nasal quality of speech and residual deformities of lip. On examination he was found to have the following problems.
Short soft palate with nasopharyngeal insufficiency.
Deficiency of vermillion of upper lip.
Malocclusion of teeth, mainly on left side.
He was advised revision palatoplasty by Furlow’s technique followed by speech therapy to improve speech. Facial appearance can be improved by orthodontic correction of teeth alignment followed by augmentation of vermillion of upper lip by fat grafting. In addition scar of lip repair can be masked by hair grafting at a later stage.

Four more surgical procedures have been suggested by doctors. The first two are to be done at about a week’s interval. Estimated expenses for them will be
a) Orthodontic Surgery : Rs. 24,000/-
(b) Palatoplasty: Rs. 65,000/- to Rs. 80,000/-
After these operations Lijo will have to undergo speech therapy for a period of at least one month. Depending on the result the doctors will decide further steps.
Mr. Simon’s only income is derived from a part-time job of helping to keep accounts for a local finance company. He requests members and well-wishers of Ammucare Charitable Trust for generous assistance to meet the cost of the pending surgical procedures his son has to undergo.
