Up-skilling women's lives towards self- sustenance
A stitch in time, saves a lifetime...
To enable women to take the forefront, Ammucare has launched the Mohanpur Skill Training and Development Centre. It is a small training and manufacturing unit set up at Mohanpur village in Jharkhand, near Jamshedpur. The centre imparts skill-based training to aspiring women deprived of education due to lack of finances. By training them to design and create fabric-based products and garments, the initiative is a push towards generating self-employment and revenue for women.
The centre began as a small rented room in a village. We have now moved into a larger room with 6 motorised sewing machines, steam iron, electricity and furniture. It currently supports 11 women. They were taught how to draw straight lines and shapes; to use scissors and cut different shapes and are now learning how to hand stitch and embroider. Alongside training in design and sewing, they are being equipped with basic English to prepare for the future. The empowerment project, though in its nascent stage, has elaborate plans of providing technical and marketing know-how to help them be very successful and in turn support more women.
